About Us

Placita Market La Oaxaqueña was founded in 2004 by the Lopez family to bring the flavors and traditions of Oaxaca to Los Angeles. The name Placita carries deep meaning, it reflects the idea of a plaza or small market, a place where families gather to shop for fresh produce and everyday groceries. In Oaxaca, a placita is more than just a store, it’s a community hub. By choosing this name, the Lopez family wanted to honor their roots while creating a welcoming space for their neighbors in Mid-Wilshire and Koreatown.

Originally from a small pueblo outside the cities of Oaxaca, the founders knew little about running a business but carried with them a strong work ethic from years of farming and raising animals. Driven by the dream of independence and the “American Dream,” they built the market from the ground up. Today, second-generation owner Ricardo Lopez continues his parents’ legacy, hand-selecting fresh produce each morning and expanding the market’s offerings to include Oaxacan specialties, pan dulce, and household essentials.
